MEMORIAL PLAQUES DEDICATED TO THE WORDS SPOKEN BY RUSSIAN WRITERS AT THE 1988 LISBON LITERATURE CONFERENCE
2024 - 2025
flowers, ribbons, epoxy resin, laser engraving, acrylic
On 9 May 2024, the monument to the Heroes of the Red Army in Vienna is still covered with numerous bouquets, St George's ribbons and ribbons from the embassies of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc. Collected and then placed in transparent epoxy resin, the rotten and moldy evidence of flourishing Russian imperialism recreates frozen fragments and perpetuates this place of memory. The plaque continues the stylistic tradition of monumental memorials commemorating the victory in World War II in the USSR scattered across the former Soviet bloc.
The inscription quotes a panel discussion between Soviet and Central European writers on the concept of Central Europe held at the 1988 Lisbon Literary Conference. The words spoken by Russian authors from the Union and exile illustrate the inseparability of imperial politics and art. The objects undermine the image of Russian artists as dissidents of the ‘empire’ and point to the structure of creating an image of the empire through great art.
